Old Capitol Criterium – 4/27/08
ISCorp lined up with 6 riders to contest Lowell’s favorite race on campus in Iowa City: Steve, Kyle, Matthew, Eric, Jordan, and Zack.
The race started out aggressively, but with the field fresh, gaps closed quickly and the race stayed together for the first 8 laps. Finally, Matthew attacked with one other rider and immediately gained a 10 second gap on the field. With ISCorp the only major team with a rider up the road, we aggressively chased wheels to try to prevent other teams from getting a representative up the road without a free-ride for one of us.
After a long stint off the front Matthew’s break finally came back. After 4-5 laps of counter-attacks, Kyle launched and with the help of Frankie Dierking and a Mercy rider, established a 15 second gap on the field within just a few laps. Again Trek was put on the defensive and with ISCorp shutting down any bridge attempts, they resorted to putting their team on the front with 10 laps to go. With some help from GP, the gap came back to 10 seconds, but that would be closest it would come. Several riders again tried to bridged, but only ended up disrupting the chase, and the break rolled out to a 40s lead by the end of the race.
Bell lap, in the break, Frankie jumped with two corners to go, and held on for the win, with Kyle rolling in an awesome 2nd place.
Back down the hill, and onto the lower straight-away, Jordan found Steve and launched a leadout up the hill, with GP’s Eric Marcotte in tow. Just after the second-to-last corner, Marcotte opened up his sprint and held off Steve for the field sprint. Jordan held on for 3rd in the field, with Matthew taking 11th overall.
In the end, a great showing for the ISCorp boys with a 2nd, 5th, 6th, and 11th on the day. |
