Iowa City Road Race – 4/26/08

A warm-up would’ve been nice for this one, as 20-30mph winds were the story of the day.

ISCorp was represented by a sizeable team of Steve, Matthew, Eric, Kyle, Jordan, Zach, and Weston lining up for the 60-some mile road race.

Straight from the gun the race was in chaos as everyone was searching for wheels in the cross winds. After 1.5 miles, the race turned into the tailwind, and things calmed a bit. Steve took a flyer, but the field wasn’t much interested in letting early breaks go, and he was brought back within the first lap.

Lap two brought the best looking break of the race, with Trek, Mercy, and Eric getting up the road. With the major teams watching wheels, it took the remainder of the field a lap to get organized, but the break came back.

Immediately after getting caught, Bill Stolte from Trek re-launched a move and went on solo to build up a 30s gap. A half lap later, Steve attacked from the field and attempted to bridge, but got caught in no-man’s land.

With 1 lap to go, Bill and Steve were separated by 20s, while Steve was still 20s up on the field. Right as the field turned into the headwind, an acceleration brought Steve back and left Bill out front. 2 miles later, the field was intact again. Several moves were tried, including one by Zack, but the field was intent on a bunch kick, and it all stayed together for the end.

25mph uphill headwind sprints are always tricky to read, and we were two scattered in the field to work together in the end. Zack ended up with a fine 5th place, with Jordan in 7th, and Kyle in 11th.
