Baraboo Road Race – 05/03/08

A little ridiculous.

Baraboo has never had pleasant weather and the ’08 version was no different. 20mph winds, cloudy skies, and temps in the low 50’s made for a race everyone just wanted to get done with in a hurry (which was quite possible, given the race was only 45 miles).

ISCorp lined up with the biggest team in a 17 person field with Eric, Steve, Matthew, Kyle, and Jordan taking the start.

I think it’s too complicated to explain, but less than 5 miles into the race, the main ‘break’ of the race had been established and included all 5 ISCorp riders, Dan Ajer, and James Stemper.

On the second climb on lap one, Ajer fell off with Kyle following his wheel.

Down by the start/finish, Kyle attacked Ajer, but with 4 riders in a break of five, we didn’t want to get too picky, so we continued to roll sans Kyle.

After another lap of having the break riding hard, the gap was safe, and we began attacking Stemper. For 1 on 4, he put up an impressive fight, and it took nearly 5 miles of attacks, counter-attacks, and counter-counter-attacks until we finally got Steve and Matthew off the front. Stemper held them at 10 seconds for a long time until the two finally started to open the gap.

Matthew rolled across the line for the win with Steve in 2nd. James rolled a hard race and took third uncontested with Jordan on his wheel. Eric finished 5th just behind, while Kyle held on for 6th after holding off the remaining chase groups from behind.

So to recap, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th. Races don’t go much better than that.
