May 30-31, 2009 was the junior world trials where 17 and 18 year old men and women could compete for a spot on the US junior worlds team to attend the junior worlds cycling championships in Moscow. The events were held about 30 miles south west of Nashville, TN. Although the race hotel along with other hotels were south west of Nashville it was still a 20 mile drive to the start of Saturday, May 30 ITT and Sunday, May 31 RR. The race courses were out in the middle of nowhere and the road race was a logistics nightmare for support staff since there were different age category events throughout the day with different start times and the start was 11 miles from the finish and the feed zone was another 10 miles further away. The ITT course was a hilly out and back while the RR course was a 11 mile ride to the RR circuit and the circuit was a 22 mile loop. Junior boys 15-16 and junior women 17-18 did two laps on the very hilly circuit and the junior men 17-18 did three laps on the hilly RR circuit. No one on ISCorp quit the RR even though attrition in all road races was very high. I am very proud of Kaleb and Chazz for this was probably their first real hard hilly road race. Kaleb was not used to racing so late in the day and didn't know what it eat. Zack was seventh and Colton Barrett riding in an ISCorp kit was 10th. Colton will be riding for ISCorp for TRRG and l'Abitibi. James and Scott also finished and James lost contact with Scott's group due to a flat and rode it for a few miles until the fed zone where he finally got a wheel. There was neutral wheel support but on such a difficult course, there are not enough following vehicles to support all the athletes. Kaitie was DQ' d in the ITT for her time trial bike did not have junior gears and when she switched to her road bike at the last minute, her bike was not compliant to the UCI bicycle jig for her saddle was too far forward. Athletes are responsible for having legal bikes so borrowing equipment and bikes at the last minute is not wise. I've ordered a UCI bicycle jig this week and I hope to have it in time for regional camp and to verify that everyone's bikes are UCI compliant prior to leaving for the UCI sanctioned stage races, TRRG and l'Abitibi. If you are a junior 17-18 or older, your bike must be UCI compliant and will be checked at National Championships and any other event where there are bike inspections. Just because a bicycle shop sells high end equipment and bikes does not mean their mechanics and sales staff are in the know about UCI bicycle specifications. I sent everyone the UCI bicycle specifications a few days prior to last weekend. I've attached them again to this document. This document is available on the USA Cycling home page under the officials link. Lots of UCI bicycle specifications will be strictly enforced starting July 1 like seat posts and aero bars, etc. Joe Cieszynski drove the team sprinter van down with the athletes and I flew down after work and rented a car for the weekend. The sprinter is very roomy and comfortable and will probably allow us to take more stuff and bikes to TRRG and l'Abitibi than the 15 passenger rental vans allowed. Being a diesel, the mileage per athlete was awesome. Mike Weber has done a nice job with the sprinter van and we need to keep it that way.

Colorado Springs, Colo. (June 1, 2009) -- Four junior cyclists secured automatic nominations over the weekend to represent the U.S. at the 2009 UCI Road and Time Trial World Championships: Nathan Brown (Covington, Tenn./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team), Lawson Craddock (Houston, Texas/Northwest Cycling), Kendall Ryan (Ventura, Calif./VRC NOW-MS Society), and Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Proman Hit Squad). Hosted by Tristar Cycling Team, the May 30-31 Soto Classic in Nashville, Tenn. served as the 2009 UCI Junior Road and Time Trial World Championship U.S. trials, awarding a nomination to the male and female winners of the 17-18 road race and time trial events. Nathan Brown and Kendall Ryan earned their bids with victories in their respective road races. The junior men covered a total of 76.75 miles with Brown completing three laps of the course ahead of second-place finisher Kevin Gottlieb (Alexandria, Va./Squadra Coppi). In the 55.31 mile women’s contest, Ryan formed a sizable gap on the rest of the field, and despite strong chasing efforts from Rivera and Jessica Prinner (South Elgin, Ill./Athletes by Design), soloed over the line for the automatic nomination. Craddock and Rivera scored their bids by posting the fastest times in the men's and women's 17-18 time trials. Craddock pedaled the 11.11-mile men's course in 24:08 compared to the 24:26 posted by his nearest threat Charlie Avis (Palo Alto, Calif./Team Specialized Racing). Rivera clocked a 16.19 over 6.36 miles to best runner-up Jessica Prinner by about a second. The 2009 UCI Junior Road and Time Trial World Championships are slated for August 7-15 in Moscow, Russia. USA Cycling plans to announce the official roster on July 20th. |
